Why is it that whenever something is miniaturized it instantly becomes adorable?
Poodles? Cute. Teacup poodle? TOTES CUTE!
Macarons? Delicious. Mini Macarons? FREAKIN’ AWESOME!
People? Alright. Baby people? ADORBS!
Now the Fez is a pretty interesting cap. One fact I find particularly cool is that in the early 19th century, it was adopted by uber cool men in the US and UK as part of their luxury smoking outfits. Oh la la, SEXY. BUT if you take this interesting headpiece and miniaturize it (possibly placing it on the head of a cymbal toting monkey)? CUUUUTE!
Traditionally red, I thought these hats would be the perfect little craft for Valentine’s Day. It’s super simple and cheap to do, and kids get a kick out of them. It’s easy to get them involved in making these.
On to the instructions!
Make your own Valentine’s mini fez hats
The cups that you use just need to be short. You want this to be a fez and not come off as a dunce cap, you know?! Everything else is pretty readily available.Once you have all your materials, they come together pretty quickly.
Usually these cups have a white bottom, so I cut a circle out of some red paper to make the bottom red. You could also just use a red marker and just go to town coloring the bottom in too.
I poke a hole with a bamboo skewer through the paper and bottom of the cup right in the center, then pop in your brad fastener. Loop the tassel under the fastener before flipping the cup over and opening the brad tabs to secure.
Finally, cut the elastic cord to about 10″ long, depending on how big the person’s head is of course! Using the same skewer, poke 2 holes on opposite sides near the bottom, loop and tie the elastic through each hole.
That’s all there is to it really. You can get crafty and adorn your hat with stickers or other objects. I prefer to stay, “hipster simple” (yeah, it’s a saying).
I’m all about making the old new again, so I say let’s start a revolution and replace the cone hats at all parties with these. Smoking jacket optional of course!
Enjoy!
